<br>Thanks to anil's help I was able to update and install the gnome desktop. even after successful apt-get install, it didn't load. I removed my ATI HD 2600 saphire AGP video card, and replaced it with an old diamond monster-fusion PCI card. "Bingo" the login screen came up. Now after completing login I receive an error "error starting gnome setting daemon". This seems to be a problem that dates back quite some time, but few solutions that seem to apply. One solution involved editing the daemon. I'm not afraid to do that but I'm not rtyin g to corrupt anything either.

<br>There is another part to this that may yet turn out to be an issue unto itself. the panels at top and bottom that contain the controls and menu items pulse on and off several times and finally stay gone. when they are present they do not respond or activate with a mouse-click.
